Connecticut Upgraded to “A” in Giffords Law Center Annual Gun Law Scorecard

In its just-released Annual Gun Law Scorecard, Giffords Law Center awarded an “A” to Connecticut on the strength of its regulations and policies that prevent gun violence.

CT Against Gun Violence said what’s even more important is the state’s distinction as having the sixth lowest gun death rate in the country, half the national average.

An “upgrade” from the “A-” the state has carried since 2014, Connecticut is one of only three states with an “A” grade.

“We’re appreciative of the recognition awarded by the Giffords Law Center to Connecticut for the work we’ve done to pass strong gun laws and other measures that make our state one of the safest in the nation,” said CAGV Executive Director Jeremy Stein. “It’s further proof that strong gun laws save lives.”

Giffords noted that Connecticut strengthened its safe storage and ghost gun laws, prohibited open carry, required long guns to be sold with locking devices and appropriated funding for community violence intervention (CVI).

CAGV applauds Governor Lamont for introducing his Act Addressing Gun Violence and including CVI funding in his budget. The organization is grateful to the legislative leaders, committee members and safety-conscious legislators who voted HB-6667 into law and appropriated an unprecedented amount for community-based programs that are proven to reduce interpersonal gun violence that accounts for a majority of gun homicides in Connecticut.

Along with elected officials, CAGV is grateful for the allies that it works with to make Connecticut safer from gun violence. In addition, Stein noted, “Connecticut would not be A-graded without the commitment and effort of citizens who use their voices to drive change; CAGV is enormously grateful for its supporters and their tireless advocacy.”
