Tuesday’s Planning & Zoning commission meeting features a discussion item for DeCicco & Sons, a supermarket chain with nearby locations in Bedford and Armonk, NY.
In Greenwich, the grocery store would be located at 21 Glenville Street, the location of the former Stop & Shop supermarket.
According to the application narrative, since Stop & Shop closed last June, the owner has been seeking to upgrade the shopping center to attract a new supermarket tenant.
Last December, the Commission approved a rezoning of the rear portion of the property to allow for increased parking. A site plan was also approved to add 61 additional parking spaces to the shopping center.
The narrative says, “The owner is pleased to announce that a lease has been signed with DeCicco & Sons for them to open a new store at the shopping center.”
As part of renovating the existing supermarket space, DeCicco & Sons seeks to add a new rear entrance, an enclosed loading dock and cooler, and refrigeration space to the building.
Further, as part of creating a rear entrance, a reconfiguration of the rear parking lot is also proposed.
Finally, the application says that that in order to provide a more uniform parking layout, an additional portion of the property must be rezoned from residential to business (RA-1 to LBR-2) will be necessary.
According to the supermarket chain’s website, DeCicco & Sons was founded in 1973 when John DeCicco Sr convinced his family to acquire a little grocery store in the Bronx, where he worked as a delivery boy.
Over the decades they have expanded into Putnam and Westchester Counties. Today they operate ten stores in Ardsley, Armonk, Bedford, Brewster, Eastchester, Harrison, Larchmont, Millwood, Pelham, and Somers. The website indicates their 11th location is “coming soon” to Sleepy Hollow.
