This spring residents in the Glenville area of Greenwich were sad to learn that Stop & Shop did not renew their lease at 11 Glen Ridge Road. The grocery chain announced in April that the store was not meeting financial expectations.
Wegmans opened in Harrison, NY in 2020 and likely siphoned off some patrons of Glenville Stop & Shop whose customers included many from the other side of the nearby state line.
The last day of operation for Stop & Shop at the Glenville location is Thursday, June 15 at 6:00pm.
Stop & Shop does have several nearby locations including one in Greenwich on West Putnam Ave, one in Port Chester, NY an a new location just over the town line in Stamford. There were about 60 associates employed by the Glenville store. They were given an opportunity to transfer to other locations.
Nevertheless, residents of Glenville are eagerly awaiting news about what will replace Stop & Shop in their neighborhood, and are hopeful that another grocery store will fill the void.
Sutton Properties owns the building that houses Stop & Shop, the former Post Office building, and the row of businesses that includes Val’s and Glenville Photo.
A sign indicates leasing is underway for retail spaces in the recently renovated building that was home to the US Postal Service.
On Wednesday most of the shelves in Stop & Shop were half empty or empty, and pallets were stacked at the end of the aisles.
