GFP Local Trade: Bax Cycles in Cos Cob

It’s spring and the nicer weather means everyone is enjoying more time outdoors, and that means riding bikes.

The former Dave’s Cycle location at 78 Valley Road in Cos Cob has been revamped and improved, and was reopened as Bax Cycles in May 2022.

Jon Baxendale, a local resident with long ties to Greenwich, owns and operates the shop with a new energy and vision, catering to all levels of cyclists.

“I felt very strongly that this should continue to be a bike shop, and went all in when I decided to do this,” he said.

Bax Cycles in-store and online selection offers a wide range of products for any rider.

Baxendale left a 30-year career maritime career behind to re-open the shop, but the Baxendale name is a familiar one to Greenwich residents, as Terry Baxendale, his father, owned Ronnie’s and D.W. Rogers on Greenwich Avenue for 30 years.

For 30 years Bax Cycles (Dave’s Cycles) was owned and operated by Glen VanCura. Glen’s son Ian, in the service area, grew up working in the shop and is still employed today.

“My whole family worked at my dad’s store when we were younger, so we all kind of grew up in retail and have an understanding of what it takes to make it work,” Baxendale said.

As an avid cyclist with a history of racing in all disciplines, and as the father of three, Baxendale also understands family and recreational biking needs.

Whether you are an experienced cyclist, or just learning to ride, Bax Cycles has something for everyone. Their in-store and online selection offers a wide range of products for any rider. Customers can even buy online at baxcycles.com and pick up in store.

“Like anything else, bicycles need maintenance and regular service. Even if it’s just a safety check, it’s always a good idea to have professionals check your bike, before a problem occurs. It’s not good to discover your brakes need work, while careening down a hill,” Baxendale said.

Bax Cycles is locally owned and the staff genuinely care about the customer experience.

“Our love of cycling goes way beyond the walls of our bike shop,” Baxenndale said. “From Bike Rodeos/Clinics at our local schools and libraries, our soon to launch Sprockids/Youth Bike Club designed to teach and help get kids on bikes, volunteering at local events, and donations to an array of Greenwich organizations, we are immersed in the Greenwich community.”
