Camillo: Thank You to Everyone who Made Sports Equipment Drive a Success

To the editor…

I want to thank the people of Greenwich who supported my first annual sports equipment drive. The drive, which was set up to coincide with baseball’s Spring Training and conclude on or around Opening Day, was a huge success.

While the drive had a baseball theme to it,  equipment from and for  many different sports were donated. The recipients of this wonderful and giving spirit were the kids from the Greenwich Boys & Girls Club.

I would like to give a special tip of my cap to the YES (youth equipment sharing) Club of Greenwich High School for giving the drive its initial and biggest contribution.

Romano Orlando, Greg Goldstein, Brian Fagella, and about 20 other members of the club had the foresight, kindness, and determination to start such an endeavor. The town and high school community should be very proud of them.

My friend, Steve Derosa, is another person worthy of a salute for gathering baseball equipment that will hopefully help young kids in town become the type of player Steve was for many years.

I also want to thank the Cos Cob Library and the Greenwich YMCA for offering space for the items to be dropped off as well as Leslie Yager for her coverage and advocacy of this wonderful event.

Today, there are many “Club kids ” wearing big smiles  due to so many residents having big hearts.
