On Monday, Halloween, the Freedom US 30, Dennis Conner’s last 12 meter boat which he raced in America’s Cup, got stuck.

On the boat was a guest skipper who was forced to wait for the tide to come in and free the boat.

Freedom was stuck on the rocks on Hens & Chickens, which is off Greenwich Wee Captain’s Island just to the west of Hens (big rocks) and Chickens (little rocks) off Bell number 1, a navigational mark at the entrance to Greenwich Harbor.

The boat, which is aluminum, ran aground around 11:30am and was able to float off a few hours later at high tide with negligible damage.

The boat is birthed at the General Re building as a part of Patrick Sikorski’s  12 Meter Development Foundation.

Freedom was not the last 12 meter that Dennis Connor sailed. That was the 1980 defender. He had three boats for the ’83 AC, lost sailing Liberty. Then had the Stars & Stripes fleet for ’87, and won that AC. So you might want to correct your headline and story body.

He skippered another SIX 12 metres after this one (they weren’t all as good as Freedom though!).

Freedom was one of the most beautiful Newport era 12’s. Saw her tuning up in summer of ’80 as pals and I in school sailed a Ranger 29 from Point Judith up into narragansett bay, but sheesh, it was hardly the last 12 that Dennis Conner sailed in the Cup…..

Freedom was not Dennis’s last 12-Metre. That was Stars and Stripes, which he sailed to regain the cup off Fremantle in 1987.

…..and Freedom was used in 1980, not the losing 1983 defense (which was Liberty). You could say that Freedom was the last 12-meter to successfully defend the cup.

Baltoplate racing anti fowling needed I think…..
