Greenwich Police Captain Eric Scorca Promoted to Deputy Chief after 24 Years

At the Sept 24 Greenwich Board of Selectmen meeting, First Selectman Camillo said he had sat in on interviews for the vacant deputy police chief position created Deputy Chief Jim Bonney who retired following 36 years of service.

Greenwich Police Chief Heavey recommended Captain Eric Scorca for the position.

“It’s a hard thing for me to decide from our internal candidates. It’s a great problem to have. It’s a struggle because I have three outstanding captains who all applied. They all do great work, but only one of them can make deputy chief,” Heavey said.

“It’s a testament to the department that we have a good bench and that we have a succession plan and certainly the department continues to develop its leadership so that going into the future when the chief and deputy chiefs move on, that there will be people to move up.”

Capt Scorca is a 24-year veteran of the police department.

Currently he is the department’s longest serving captain.

Scorca commands the patrol division, which is the largest division.

He is  also the commander of the SWAT team  – the special response unit. He is a past recipient of the Dr. John Clarke Award and has numerous commendations and letters of appreciation from the public.

Heavey said that two years earlier, when he was recommending another deputy chief for promotion, Scorca was one of the candidates. Since then, he said the ink was still drying on Scorca’s thesis. Scorca just completed his masters in public administration at Western Connecticut State University.

“That initiative put him a little bit ahead of the others, but nothing to say bad about the other two captains. It’s a hard thing for me to decide among all the good people,” Heavey continued.

“Capt Scorca has been a problem solver and a person that the the staff, the rank and file go to to get things done. It is without reservation that I recommend him for the position of deputy chief.”

Camillo agreed that the two other captains were terrific and were also capable to do the job.

“Capt Scorca has put the time in. He really is one of those self-starters. He’s full of ideas. I think he’s got Red Bull running through his veins. He’s on the go all the time and you really don’t hear a bad word about him,” Camillo said.

After a round of applause, Scorca thanked the Selectmen.

“I appreciate the opportunity fulfill a higher rank and to serve and protect the citizens of Greenwich as I’ve been doing faithfully for the past 24 years,” he said. “I’m looking forward to the next endeavor and thank you for taking the time out speak to me and to get to know me a bit better, and my ideas and plans for the police department going into the future for the next generation of officers.”
