The Greenwich teens of the Youth Service in Action Fellowship, a service leadership program sponsored by local nonprofit Volunteers On Call, are planning a field day fundraiser entitled “Game On!” for high school students in the area.
The goal of the event is to raise money for relief efforts in Nepal and to encourage teens to spend time away from technology in order to alleviate stress and to build positive in-person relationships between diverse groups of local students.
Game On! is scheduled for Saturday, May 16 from 1:00-3:00pm at the field at the Julian Curtiss School in Greenwich.
The main activities of the event will center around fun-natured “recess” games such as capture the flag, water balloon tosses, and potato sack races. Participants will be placed on teams with students from different schools and grades in order to encourage the teens to meet new people in a recreational environment.
Youth Service in Action Fellow Kate Meurer says, “Through the fellowship program, we were able to pinpoint a couple youth issues that affect us and many teens around us daily, specifically overstress and the constant use of technology. We were able to find a way to address these issues in our community while simultaneously enabling teens to help the world through donations to Save the Children’s relief efforts in Nepal. “Game On!” gives teens a fun opportunity to relax and disconnect from technology while exercising and meeting other students. I am really excited to be a part of it.”
Tickets are $5.00 and will be available for purchase through students at Greenwich High School, Greenwich Academy, and Brunswick. All proceeds will be donated to Save the Children, a non-profit organization that works to improve the lives of children around the globe. They have worked in Nepal since 1976 and have almost 100 years of experience on the front lines of global disaster relief. Save the Children spends nearly 90% of its budget on the programs and services it delivers, so a majority of the money donated will directly assist the people of Nepal.
