New Central Middle School Takes Shape: “Exciting Developments Happening” in September

The new Central Middle School project – a two-phase 21-acre campus project – is currently in phase one. Students are being taught in the existing Central Middle School so that students and staff are not displaced during construction of the new 125,47 sq ft school, which includes classrooms, gymnasium, auditorium and cafeteria. The new middle school will house up to 660 students in a two-story structure.

On Thursday the district shared their fifth construction project update, listing “exciting developments” happening in September.

The project is on schedule and anticipated to be completed on time in August 2026.

Last week, children were welcomed back to school for their final school year in the existing building, constructed back in 1958.

The school was condemned in Feb 2022. Children were dispersed to other schools for two weeks until the building was shored up. Children returned, but repairs are only intended to last five years.

Throughout 2023 there was a bitter controversy about the size and budget for the new school.

In May 2024 the Democratic House Delegation secured 20% state reimbursement for the project, a percentage exceeding all expectations.

In June 2024 the P&Z commission approved an MI for the project.

Ground was broken in Dec 2024 and in August 2025 officials gathered for a topping off ceremony.
