Savvy 77-Year-Old Outfoxes Phone Scammers

In a case categorized as a Financial Crime, Greenwich Police explained that a potential victim, a 77-year-old resident, reported a phone scam on August 13 around noon.

According to Lt Slusarz, the reporting party said someone contacted her and said they were from Publishers Clearing House and that she had won $2.5 million.

The caller then said there was a requirement that she send $180 to the caller prior to receiving the prize money.

“We get phone scams like this a lot,” Greenwich Police Lt. Slusarz said, adding that the reporting party was wise to the scam and did not fall for it. Others aren’t always so lucky.

“When it sounds too good to be true, that’s usually an indication,” Slusarz said.
