UPDATE: Greenwich Police Respond to Central Middle School Swatting Incident with “Secure In Place” Protocol

Update: Greenwich Schools Superintendent shared a message noting that the swatting incident impacted Central Middle School. She said the school received the swatting call with a threat, but Greenwich Police were already at the building for their daily patrol and the police department believes that there is no known threat to the community at this time.

Jones noted, swatting is a criminal hoaxing tactic of deception to falsely send emergency services to a location.

“These fake calls are unfortunately not new to schools across the country, and typically reference bomb threats, gunshots, and other scary acts,” she said. “Everyone at Central Middle School is safe and we will continue to have a police presence throughout the day.

In a follow up message Tuesday morning, Jones wrote, that after further investigation, there was no evidence that the threat is credible.

However, she added, “Out of an abundance of caution, the school will remain in “Secure Building,” with no unscheduled visitors allowed into the building for the remainder of the day.

All after school activities will continue as scheduled, but with an additional police presence.

On Tuesday morning, Greenwich Police announced they had responded to a swatting call involving one of the town’s public schools.

They added that, out of an abundance of caution, the school was placed in a Secure in Place status while officers assessed the situation. Officers assigned to school patrol were already on scene at the time of the incident and immediately responded.

At the time of their announcement police said the call was not believed to be credible, and there was no known threat to the school community or the public.

As an added precaution, officers will remain at the affected school for the remainder of the school day and will conduct additional security checks at other schools throughout town.

This incident remains under active investigation. The safety and security of our students, staff, and community remains our highest priority.

All students and staff are safe at this time.
