At their Aug 13 meeting the Greenwich Board of Selectmen postponed their second read on the proposed ordinance regarding street takeovers and e-bikes. In the meantime, Greenwich Police reminded residents, particularly parents and young riders, about the importance of safely operating electric bicycles (e-bikes) and electric scooters (e-scooters).
Recently, the Greenwich Police Department has responded to incidents involving young riders who have sustained injuries while operating e-bikes or e-scooters.

“We encourage families to take the time to discuss safe riding practices and ensure young riders understand the responsibilities that come with operating them,” police said.
The noted one of the simplest and most effective ways to reduce the risk of serious injury is to wear a properly fitted helmet every time you ride. A helmet should be worn regardless of the distance traveled or how familiar a rider may be with the area.
Police shared important safety practices:
•Always wear a properly fitted helmet.
• Obey traffic signs, signals, and roadway rules.
• Ride at a safe and controlled speed. E-bikes and e-scooters can reach speeds that may be difficult to safely manage.
• Stay alert and avoid distractions.
• Be cautious at intersections, driveways, and parking lots, where vehicles may be entering or exiting.
• Increase visibility. Wear bright or reflective clothing and use appropriate lights and reflectors.
• Do not carry passengers unless the e-bike or e-scooter is specifically designed and equipped for more than one person.
• Keep both hands available for safe operation and avoid carrying items that interfere with steering, braking, or balance.
• Know the equipment. Riders should understand how to safely accelerate, brake, turn, and stop before riding in areas with vehicle or pedestrian traffic.
• Parents and guardians should speak with young riders about safe operation, appropriate riding locations, and the importance of following applicable laws and manufacturer recommendations.
E-bikes and e-scooters are not toys. Their speed and interaction with motor vehicles, pedestrians, and other roadway users can create a significant risk of injury when they are operated carelessly or without appropriate safety equipment.
