Greenwich Fire Department Promotes Seven in Packed Ceremony at Public Safety Complex

The Greenwich Fire Dept promoted seven people during a packed promotion ceremony on Thursday. Fire Chief Joseph McHugh welcomed a large turnout that included families, members of the Fire and Police Departments, friends and elected officials. After each member of the Fire Dept was introduced, he took an oath administered by First Selectman Fred Camillo.

Theodore C. Ruehl, Jr was promoted to Lieutenant.

Ryan Brainerd was promoted to Deputy Chief.

Jeffery Crumbine was promoted to Lieutenant.

Douglas Howley was promoted to Lieutenant

William Richardson was promoted to Deputy Fire Marshal.

Miklos Lengyel was promoted to Deputy Fire Marshal.

Mark Dawson was promoted to Fire Marshal.

Ryan Brainerd was promoted to Deputy Chief. His training includes Rope Rescue Tech, Trench Rescue Tech, Confined Space Tech, Structural Collapse Rescue Tech, Elevator Rescue Tech, HazMat Tech. For 16 years he was an instructor at Wolcott Regional Fire School. He served 26 years on the job, 6 years as fire lieutenant on Truck 1, 8 years fire lieutenant on Engine 1, and 2 years fire lieutenant on Engine 2.

His wife Kasey pinned his badge on his uniform.

Theodore C. Ruehl, Jr. was promoted to Lieutenant. His training includes FF I and II, Officer I, Instructor I, Hazmat Technician, Arson Inv 1, EMR, Confined Space Technician, Tench Rescue Technician, Pump Operator, Rope Rescue Tech and Cold Rescue Tech.

He has 27 years and 8 months on the job and previous assignments included Engine 1, Truck 1 and Engine 4.

Douglas Howley Jr was promoted to Lieutenant. Howley has a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice: Investigative Services and a minor in Fire Science, both from University of New Haven. His training includes: EMT-, Hazmat Tech, Confined Space Reserve Tech, Trench Rescue Tech, Fire Instructor, Certified Pump Operator and Member of local 1042 Peer Support Group.

He has 14 year on the job and was previously assigned to Engine 4, Engine 3 and is coming off seven years on Engine 1.

His fiancé Valerie pinned his new badge to his uniform.

Jeffrey Crumbine, a Greenwich native, graduated with a BS in International Politics from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University and earned a MBA at Fordham University.

His training includes Firefighter 1 and 2, EMT, Hazardous Materials Technician, Confined Space Rescue Technician, Trench Rescue Technician, Certified Fire Officer, Certified Fire Instructor, and Certified Fire Inspector.

He has 13-1/2 years on the job. Retired lieutenant Glen Krizan, Crumbine’s mentor and former boss, pinned Crumbine’s badge to his uniform.

Mark Dawson was promoted from Deputy Fire Marshal to Fire Marshal. He has an Associate’s degree in Fire Science and Administration and his training includes: National Fire Academy/Essentials in Fire Investigation; National Fire Academy/Fire Investigation Electrical Systems; National Fire Academy/Introduction to Strategic Community Risk Reduction; National Fire Academy/Testing and Evaluation of Water Supplies for Fire Protection; national fire Academy/Principles of Building Construction; International Assocaition of Arson Investigation – Fire Investigation technician (FIT); Fire Officer III and Instructor II.

He has 22 years of service with the Sound Beach Volunteer Fire Dept, 26 years of service Career Department: Engine 2, Engine 5, Engine 8, and Truck 1 before becoming Deputy Fire Marshal.

His wife Konnie pinned his badge to his uniform.

Dawson shared remarks saying our fire marshal’s division had a long and important history marked by great achievements as well as struggles.

“We have faced challenges that tested us and forced us to adapt. Those struggles are part of our story,” he said. “They remind us of lessons we’ve learned in resilience, and defines us. But today we begin a new chapter. We carry  forward those lessons learned with a fresh new perspective, a renewed vision and commitment to building something stronger than ever before.”

“As fire marshal, my focus is clear. Advancing community risk reduction, and  in every way possible, fire prevention, public safety are not just about codes and inspections,” Dawson said. “They are about protecting lives, preserving property and ensuring that everyone that comes to Greenwich whether to live, to dine, to shop, or enjoy recreation, can do so in the safest environment possible.”

“This new beginning is not about a title. It’s not about a position. It’s about building a culture of prevention, readiness and service.”

William Richardson was promoted to Deputy Fire Marshal. He has a degree in Fire Administration from Norwalk Community College and his training includes Fire Officer II and Fire Instructor III.

Richardson has 25 years with the Greenwich Fire Dept, the last 11 years as Lieutenant assigned to Training.

Miklos Lengyel was promoted to Deputy Fire Marshal. He studied Electronics in Trade School and his training includes Fire Service Inst 1, EMSI. He has 25 years on the job, Engine 5, Engine 1, Truck 1, and Engine 8.
