Early Friday morning Greenwich lost former Republican Selectman Peter Crumbine. He was 84.
According to Ed Dadakis, former chair of the Greenwich RTC, Crumbine loved Greenwich and showed it every day by engaging in all aspects of town.
He is best known as a longtime Selectman who served five terms under four different First Selectmen from 1999-2009 and was also a member of the Representative Town Meeting from 1992-1995 and the Board of Estimate and Taxation from 1996-1999.
Crumbine distinguished himself by listening to people of our town and working hard to resolve their concerns,” Dadakis said. “I worked closely with him on a variety of matters over the years and always valued his insight and guidance.”
After his time as a Selectman, Crumbine, an avid swimmer and athlete, continued to give back through his own volunteer work, and by serving on the Selectman’s Nominations Advisory Committee. In his role on SNAC he made sure other volunteers like him were able to participate on Greenwich’s boards, commissions and committees.
In 2019 Glenville Volunteer Fire Department named Peter and his wife Bea recipients of the David N. Theis Award for Outstanding Service to the Community in recognition of their decades of work on behalf of the town.
Former Selectman Drew Marzullo said Mr. Crumbine was a wonderful man, and that he had often reached out Crumbine for advice.
“Reynold and I send our love to Bea and her entire family,” Marzullo said. “Peter was kind, extremely intelligent and generous with his time. We talked often when I served as Selectman and he was always there to offer advice about politics and about life in general. I know he struggled with medical issues but his strength was inspirational.”
Earlier this week Greenwich First Selectman Fred Camillo declared Tuesday Peter Crumbine Day in the Town of Greenwich to honor Crumbine’s decades of service to the Town.
“A former Selectman, BET and RTM member, Peter also has been an avid volunteer in Town and he and his wife Bea have been pillars of the community for 42 years,” Camillo said.
In Camillo’s proclamation he noted that Crumbine was a Greenwich resident with his wife Bea for 42 years and during that time he dedicated his life to selflessly volunteering and serving the community to help make Greenwich an even better place to live.
On Friday, after news that Mr. Crumbine had passed, Mr. Camillo sent an email saying, “I have met many fine people in my life, and certainly many during my tenure in public service for he past three decades, but no one ever as selfless and respected at Peter Crumbine. Peter was what we would call a ‘happy warrior.’ He loved to debate, was a committed Republican, and as principled as anyone, yet did so in a dignified and respectful manner that drew praise and admiration from all who knew him.”
“Together with his beloved Bea, the unofficial Ambassador of Greenwich, Peter will leave a legacy of love and devoted service to Greenwich. We will miss him, but we will never forget him.”
