Town to Enforce Rules for Dogs at the Beach: Leash Your Dogs and Pick up After Them

In the First Selectman’s weekly “Community Connections” eblast, Fred Camillo urges residents to abide by the ordinance that requires them to leash their dogs at Tod’s Point (aka Greenwich Point Park).

Camillo noted that one of the most vital rules to follow is that all dogs must remain on a secure leash less than 10 feet long in the hands of an adult.

This rule is in place for the entire park at Greenwich Point with no exceptions.

“This is a Town ordinance, not state law, but if the dog is not under your control, state law won’t save you from a ticket,” Camillo wrote. “We have received complaints about dogs that are not being properly leashed and this is something we take very seriously.”

On Friday, Lauren Rabin, subbing for Camillo on Ask the First show on WGCH 1490 radio, said enforcement was going to be increased.

“Anybody who breaks the rules is going to be subject to a fine,” she said.

Also, in his e-blast, Camillo said anyone bringing their dogs to Greenwich Point must promptly clean up their messes. Not only does this create an unpleasant atmosphere at the Point, if you don’t do this it presents a health hazard and removal of dog feces must be done under town ordinance.

Additionally, all dogs must have a valid dog license and a rabies vaccination attached to their collar or harness.

License your dogs through the town clerk’s office. Bring a copy of your dog’s current rabies certificate.

Camillo said the rules and regulations for dogs at the beach from Dec 1 through March 31 are going to be enforced by the town and those who break the rules may be subject to a fine. Anyone with any questions about this policy can call the Greenwich Police Department’s Animal Control Division at 203-622-8299.

Also on the topic of dogs in parks, a Greenwich Sentinel feature written by Maesa Procopio on Jan 14 written was based on an interview with Camillo.

The piece quotes Camillo saying that in addition to the dog park at Grass Island, “We have a second lot that can be a dog park on the western side of town, I’ll be announcing it shortly. The goal is to have one on the western side and one on the eastern side, and of course the one in the central Greenwich at Grass Island. The one on the western side is almost secured, and the one on the eastern side is on hold.”
