RTM Recanvass Notices Delivered by Bicycle in Two Districts

Greenwich outdoor and active transportation enthusiast, Ernst Schirmer, accepted the Registrars of Voters’ special request for assistance in the delivery of District Notices as these past Municipal Elections require a recanvass.

All affected RTM’s and RTM candidates had to receive a hand-delivered envelope with the information details no later than Saturday evening as the Registrar of Voters scheduled the recanvass to begin on Monday, November 13, at 9:00 am in the Town Hall meeting room.

Candidates in two of the 8 districts subject to the recanvass were delivered by Mr. Schirmer.

Schirmer had agreed to deliver 27 notices for District 7 and 41 notices for the District 8 RTM candidates, and elected to perform the task entirely by bicycle. Schirmer noted he uses a regular pedal road bike, not an e-bike.

To complete all deliveries across the two districts, Schirmer’s bicycle route totaled 46 miles.

“What a spectacular day it really was, with beautiful fall weather and amazing seasonal colors everywhere, and it was also a new experience. To hand-deliver to all these Public Service officials and candidates across our lovely Town felt like the ‘Tour de Greenwich,'” Schirmer said.

Schirmer said he’d like residents including all the members of the BET to take note of this effort in the name of local active transportation.

On Tuesday evening, November 14, Greenwich’s BET officials will be asked to approve some $49,400 as an initial interim funding request for a new multi-use (bicycle/pedestrian) path between Old Greenwich’s Binney Park and southwest Stamford’s John J. Boccuzzi Park.

The Town of Greenwich and the City of Stamford partnered up on this small project and up to 80% of its initial design and planning cost was awarded by the State of CT Dept of Energy and Environmental Protection and its CT Recreational Trails Grant program: $270,400 from State of CT DEEP, $49,400 Greenwich portion, $18,200 Stamford portion as the trail is 1.9 miles in our Town and 0.7 miles in Stamford.

Mr. Schirmer added, “I sincerely wish that all of our BET officials will support this modest $49,400 request. It is overdue that our Town completes such an active transportation project. Not only will it improve our recreational offering but, more importantly, it will provide a significant improvement in traffic safety for all road participants.”
