North Street Bridge Replacement Project Pushed back to 2026

On Friday, Greenwich Dept of Public Works announced that based on an updated schedule, construction on the North Street Bridge Replacement Project is now projected to begin in spring 2026.

DPW said in a statement that the project continues to advance with significant funding support from the State of Connecticut, and that while the original target date for advertising the project had passed, they recently received confirmation that the Final Design Submission has been approved by the CT Department of Transportation, which they described as “a critical milestone in the process.”

DPW is now awaiting formal authorization from the State to initiate the bidding phase.

They added that in a recent coordination meeting with representatives from the grant program, they gained greater clarity on the anticipated construction timeline and next steps.

Back in January, DPW presented a 12-week road closure and detour for summer 2025.

While construction is pushed back to 2026, DPW said utility relocations and preparatory work for the construction will continue in the coming months with minimal impacts to traffic.

Recognizing the importance of minimizing community impacts, DPW has emphasized to the CT Dept of Transportation the need to avoid overlapping detours with the upcoming Route 1 at Hillside Bridge project.

“Both agencies are committed to working together to ensure safe, efficient travel and to proactively manage traffic flow throughout the area,” DPW said.

Once the State issues its authorization to bid, DPW will move forward with the bidding process.

To reduce disruptions to local traffic and school transportation, the Department plans to schedule the full road closure during the summer of 2026, aligning with best practices for seasonal project timing.

The bridge was originally built in 1909 and rebuilt in 1950. After the last inspection on March 7, 2022, the bridge was deemed in critical condition. This resulted in emergency repairs and the hiring of WMC Consulting Engineers to create a preliminary bridge design.

About 7,000 vehicles cross the bridge daily, and many of the vehicles are heavy trucks exceeding the 4-ton weight limit on the bridge.
