The “Do It All Dudes,” Greenwich College Students Find Niche Doing Odd Jobs at Reasonable Prices

Meet the Do It All Dudes, three Greenwich High School graduates, Hunter Merritt, Colin Zeller and Lane Critchell who are home for the summer from Penn State, Yale and Trinity College respectively.

Their business name is clever, and their red truck logo is memorable, but there’s more to like.On a hot afternoon this week, the Do It All Dudes stopped in Loughlin Park after a day of yard work and dump runs to share the story of their growing business.

The impetus for the business stemmed from Critchell’s purchase of a used pickup truck last winter.

Critchell, who he has a twin brother and a younger brother who just started driving, said it took some time to save up for the truck, but it an immediate game changer.

“I found a great deal on the truck in New Jersey. I had no intention of starting a business, but as soon as I got it, my mom and all her friends started reaching out to ask me to do odd jobs,” he recalled. “Especially around the holidays, I had tons of people asking me to bring their Christmas trees to the dump.”

From there, more people started asking for help with dump runs and moving furniture.

When he returned to Trinity College in Hartford after break, Critchell recalled wondering how he and his friends could amp up the effort over the summer.

“I wondered, maybe there is a niche here for people who don’t want to pay a handyman service’s exorbitant prices, but also can’t or don’t want to do it for themselves,” he explained, adding the dudes have their own power washing and lawn equipment. “We found there was a lot of space for us.”

Critchell, Merritt and Zeller started an Instagram page and hung up flyers around Greenwich.

“Now we’re pretty much busy every day,” Critchell added.

The three dudes said they enjoy their work because every day is different.

“We never know what we’re going to get, which makes it fun and keeps us on our toes,” Critchell said.

“Anything you can think of, we’ll come and do it. The other day we set up a barbecue at a celebration of life in the Tod’s Point clambake area,” Critchell said, adding that while the memorial service was underway, he and Merritt and Zeller set the picnic tables and started grilling.

“We stayed to serve people and to make sure people had everything they needed,” he said.

The following day they set up furniture for a woman in Bedford, and the third day they were mulching and weeding elsewhere in Greenwich.

Events/Party Assistance

“The events niche is a cool window of opportunity we found our way to. We’ve been helping people whether they need servers or bartenders,” Critchell continued, adding that the past weekend he and Merritt and Zeller worked an event in Southampton, NY.

Of course their blue collared shirts are impressive as their positive attitudes. They have logo work t-shirts on order as well.

“When we worked the barbecue people were super surprised we had our matching shirts. It goes a long way,” Merritt said.

But, again, it’s the attitude and work ethic that are most impressive.

“It’s not easy work and this summer with how hot it’s been – we’re willing to do anything, in any weather,  in any temperature. The other day we were mulching in the 90° heat, which we embrace. It’s a challenge, and it’s a way to get us into good shape and keep us conditioned.”

Repeat Business

No surprise, the Do It All Dudes say repeat customers have become the norm.

“Once they meet us and see what we’re capable of, they keep coming up with other tasks,” Critchell said. “They might start with one thing in their back yard they want to get rid of. And then they call the next day with more projects.”

The Do It All Dudes are available to travel throughout both Fairfield County and Westchester Counties for work.

While the work is seasonal because the dudes are college students, they anticipate working when they’re home during Thanksgiving break, winter break and next summer.

Their website lists their services including: junk removal/dump runs, party/event help, house/garage clean outs, lawn work, power washing, sports lessons, any other task/errand you need done.
