Family Owned, Cups N’ Cones, Marks Grand Opening with a Crowd and Ribbon Cutting

A crowd full of middle schoolers screamed for ice cream on Saturday. The 11:00am ribbon cutting and grand opening of Cups N’ Cones at the former Rosie’s in Old Greenwich drew over 100 people who waited anxiously for the store doors to open.

It had been months since Rosie’s closed and four years since Darlene’s ice cream and chocolate shop closed. Cravings had been building.

In the moment the doors opened, a throng of kids rushed toward the familiar self serve stations and on to the counter to add everything from Nutella to mini marshmallows, and from caramel turtles to peanut butter cups.

“When Old Greenwich doesn’t have its frozen yogurt or ice cream shop open for more than a month, people don’t know what to do with themselves,” said Alex Buzik. “There are other options in Greenwich, but on Sound Beach Ave, kids were always walking by and asking when we were going to reopen.”

“We were overwhelmed with the love and support from our community,” said Alex’s wife, Anna Buzik after the event. “The grand opening was highly anticipated and I hope we didn’t disappoint.”

Anna said that while ice cream was a huge hit, she was happy to offer much more than ice cream and frozen yogurt.

Anna and her husband Alex undertook a major renovation in January.

“Anna designed the entire store,” Alex said. “We repainted, and there’s a new mural. We rebuilt the entire front of the house and added all new equipment.”

First Selectman Fred Camillo, who grew up in town said, “It seemed like every neighborhood had an ice cream store. Seeing one open up here in Old Greenwich, especially on the heels of a two-year pandemic, is wonderful to see.”

“In my many years of public service, I have attended many ribbon cuttings and grand openings,” Camillo added. “The Cups n’ Cones event was one for the record books as the amount of people lined up to go inside, and the joy and happiness all around was a welcome sight.”

“My husband and I grew up hanging out with our friends at Friendly’s,” said Selectwoman Janet Stone McGuigan. “It’s nice to see so many kids here. There needs to be more places for our youth to hang out.”

The Cups N’ Cones menu features familiar frozen yogurt flavors, including Cake Batter, Cookies n’ Cream, Cappuccino, Irish Mint and Pistachio.

In addition to soft service ice cream in Vanilla and Chocolate, there are a dozen scooped style ice cream flavors including Mint Chocolate Chip, Cookie Dough, Cotton Candy, Butter Pecan.

Cups N’ Cones also offers milk shakes from any of the flavors, Belgian Waffles for a snack or dessert, and a variety of beverages including coffee, hot chocolate, iced tea, lemonade, strawberry lemonade and limeade.

Customers can bring home pints and quarts of their favorite flavors. All ice creams and frozen yogurts are kosher and most are gluten free.

Cups N’ Cones is located at 235 Sound Beach Ave, Old Greenwich.
