Newly Renovated Pemberwick Deli: We Hope You Say, ‘That’s My Deli’

The owner of Castle View Deli, Henry Jedda, now has a second deli in Greenwich. Pemberwick Deli, located at 83 Pemberwick Road, recently opened after a five month gut renovation.

Today the space is bright and immaculately clean. Where previously there were rows of shelves, now there is a spacious seating area with tables and chairs, in addition to a counter with a view of activity on Pemberwick Road. The refreshed look features an expanse of wall adorned with food illustrations. On the opposite wall, behind the counter are enlarged menus featuring breakfast and grill items, as well as sandwiches and salads.

The deli had a soft opening in mid-May and is picking up steam with locals in the well trafficked corridor connecting the Post Road to Glenville frequenting the eatery.

Mr. Jedda had a long career in the textile industry in New York, importing silk fabrics. In retirement, six years ago, he took over the well-established Castle View Deli on Morgan Ave at the corner of Comly Ave, which had already been in operation for 80 years.  The previous owners, Lou and Donna Sprio ran it for 26 years. Not one to stay idle, he applied his business skills to that deli, which he said has an established following.

Though he had no plans for expansion, when Vi’s Polish Deli closed, Jedda took advantage of the opportunity to open a second deli.

Unlike Castle View, Pemberwick Deli has plenty ample seating and he hopes friends and colleagues will meet for breakfast or lunch. There is on street parking on the block and Jedda said busy families often pick up hot dishes in the afternoon to bring home for dinner.

“I’m hoping this will become a community hub – something for the neighborhood,” Jedda said. “Except for deli meats and cheeses, everything at both my delis is made in-house from scratch. Nothing is pre-made. We cook everything fresh to order.”

Coffee is brewed from New England Coffee and muffins are baked in time for the first customers through the door at 7:00am. Tea is brewed for ice tea and the deli offers five flavors of ice coffee.

“I want the people in the neighborhood to say, ‘That’s my deli,'” Jedda said.

Recently a steady stream of familiar locals arrived for lunch, including Jeff Stempien, Ron Passerelli and Vinny Chumenti from Vinnie Pinstripe, who smiled on his way out and announced, “I like real food every day.”

Jedda said he is proud of the professionalism of his staff, which includes Douglas Mercario, the main chef and manager, responsible for the hot dishes, as well as Jenny, Henry, Guillermo and Nelly.

Jedda is open to naming menu items after customers. Today, the breakfast menu features the Sharon, named after Jedda’s daughter, featuring Egg Whites, Turkey Bacon, Spinach and Cheddar Cheese in a Whole Wheat Wrap.

“If anyone comes up with a great sandwich, I’ll name it after you,” Jedda said, adding that police, fire and EMS workers receive a discount. “They put their lives on the line. Nobody thanks them enough.”

Jedda is offering a free drink to Greenwich Free Press readers with purchase of a sandwich, through June. Just mention GFP.
