Montanaro: Don’t Ignore the Facts on Grant Money for Registrars

Submitted by Joe Montanaro, Cos Cob

To All RTM Members and Greenwich Neighbors,

Calling those who are against receiving the grant “crazy” only shows how feeble and over emotional some on this body can be. Labeling those with opposing viewpoints as “conspiracy theorists” must mean you are unwilling to look at the facts behind this money or you are intentionally ignoring them. It is very predictable and infinitely feckless. An informed and educated populace is the enemy of the state and apparently the enemy of some on this body. I can guarantee you that, if the general public were properly informed and made aware of this grant, an overwhelming majority would be against it. The problem with our government is the lack of transparency and how those “elected” do not truly represent their constituents.

There is no lack of confidence in the registrar’s office. It is about a very dangerous precedent of injecting private money into our voting process. I know Fred DeCaro and Mary Hegarty are wise enough to spend the money judiciously. However, this is a long game played by nefarious actors. There is no denying the effects this sort of dirty, dark money has had on our democracy. A true, bipartisan effort should focus on keeping private money out of our voting offices. We cannot assume that those in control of the money will forever be apolitical and unbiased towards either side. Unfortunately, we must protect against the very opposite. Let us not be short sighted. Let us, as members of this community and you as members of the RTM, fight for the betterment of this town and help to inspire more individual involvement by the people who live here. It’s not just about changing minds; it’s about opening minds and creating critical thought.

Injecting this grant into our local government is not the behavior of rational-minded moderates, it is a radical concept and a gateway to the undermining of our election process.

Please vote NO to accepting these funds.

Please sign this petition to help implore your town representatives to vote no. Thank you. https://bit.ly/RespectfullyPleasevoteNo
