KOVEN: Build a New Central Middle School the Same Size as Current Building

Submitted by Rachel Koven, Greenwich

Dear Board of Education Members,

As a concerned resident living right next to CMS and a taxpayer of Greenwich, I am writing to urge you to vote in line with the ed specifications that match actual enrollment projections and keep the school the same size as the current Central Middle School building.

It is unnecessary to construct a 135k square foot, 3 story (or 2.5 as it is spun) building in our neighborhood and also doesn’t meet the needs of students. The proposed location for the building is also the most expensive and most intrusive to the neighborhood, which raises concerns about responsible spending of taxpayer dollars.

Furthermore, I would like to express my disappointment in the lack of transparency and meaningful input from community members. Despite claims of various meetings, none of us immediately impacted by the school have been listened to or included in the discussion.

I implore you to consider the impact that this decision will have on the community and to prioritize the needs of residents as well. If the board fails to take into account the concerns of the community, there may be no choice but to explore other legal options. We certainly hope it doesn’t come to that and that you vote the right way during Monday’s Special meeting.

As members of the Board of Education, you have a responsibility to be good neighbors and good stewards of our taxpayers. Please consider this responsibility when making your decision regarding the new Central Middle School.

We support a new Central Middle School. Let’s do it responsibly.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
Rachel Koven
