ARZENO: Republicans Should Be Holding Their Leadership Accountable

Submitted by Hector E. Arzeno, D-151 resident, RTM member District 8

I woke up on Wednesday last week curious about the Georgia election and likewise wanting to watch the confirmation by Congress of the Electoral Votes. Instead, I found myself witnessing the president incite his followers to overturn the popular will of the people and the invasion of the Capitol.

In my wildest dreams, I never thought that this would be something I would see in our Country. It was upsetting and questions the direction our country, society and communities are going?

Ronald Regan famously said, “We must reject the idea that every time a law is broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker. It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions.”

Apparently, the RTC is unaware of this bedrock Republican principle, or perhaps it no longer resonates with them.

After reading the RTC’s statement on the attempted Coup, wherein they meandered to a discussion about zoning regulations and school compliance with ADA, subjects that most if not all of us promote in Greenwich, bearing no relation to the horrific actions their party just took part in, I am saddened by how far our local Republicans have fallen.

Your Republican leadership fomented a riot and attempted a coup. A party that supposedly supports the Police should be horrified that their members, operating under their brand and banner, beat a police officer to death with a fire extinguisher. You should be disgusted that your party leadership brazenly peddled lies to incite their party membership, stating “Today is the day American patriots start taking down names and kicking ass.” (Mo Brooks at the President’s rally).

The RTC should be showing moral courage, and instead of deflecting, they should be making clear, unequivocal statements that better represent their constituents here in Greenwich.

They should be standing by the few party members who have come out to say this was a step too far.

They should be making every effort to shore up their brand, and excise the cancer of Trumpism.

They should be holding their leadership accountable.

Republicans used to champion the idea that Character matters. Apparently, this too has been corrupted by willful indifference to the daily lies from their leadership.
