Dr. Robert S. Weiss, Professor of Molecular Medicine at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, is set to speak on May 19 at 7:00 pm at the Greenwich Library on “Dogs are People Too: How Our Pets Can Help Us Cure Cancer.”
Approximately 6 million dogs are diagnosed with cancer each year, and more than half of dogs older than 10 will develop cancers such as osteosarcoma, lymphoma or melanoma. The genetic makeup of dogs and humans is very similar and therefore, much work is being done in the cancer research arena that is proving beneficial to canines and their human owners.
Topics to be discussed by Dr. Weiss will include recent trends in cancer research and therapy benefiting both canines and humans; overview of the research efforts at Cornell and the Veterinary College leading to new discoveries and treatments, and the pipeline for drug development and clinical trials in dogs and people.
