The Friends of Greenwich Point Seeks Volunteers to Weed and Seed Wildflower Meadow

The Friends of Greenwich Point is seeking volunteers to help plant, seed and weed our new wildflower meadow on Saturday November 5, from 9:30 am to 12:00 noon. (Rain date Nov 12).

Meet at the Cow Barn parking lot near the Old Greenwich Yacht Club in Greenwich Point, just above the Chimes Building.

Wear long sleeves, long pants and work gloves. Metal rakes, hoes and trowels are welcome, but not required.

Last fall The Friends of Greenwich Point discovered a natural open area at the west end of the Point where Goldenrod, White Snakeroot and Common Milkweed were growing in good numbers. These native plants directly support the life cycle of the Monarch butterfly.

The Friends of Greenwich Point Conservation Committee decided to adopt this area to nurture and diversify the native pollinator plants in order to support more native species. With the help of Dan Brubaker of the Greenwich Land Trust and others, they planted Boneset, Mountain Mint, Verbena, Yarrow, Black-Eyed Susans, Columbine and more as well as scattered seeds of many native varieties of wildflowers.

Many of the new plants have come up during the year. Already this area has been attracting more migrating songbirds.

Progress is being made but the greatest challenge is to remove and discourage the widespread invasive plant Mugwort (Artemesia vulgaris), which needs to be kept at bay so it does not crowd new plants out.

Come out on November 5 to help plant native plugs, add more seeds and most of all pull the Mugwort out so the targeted species can flourish. No registration is required.
