Second Session of Israel Odyssey Greenwich for High Schoolers: “My Israel Story”

By Rabbi Boruch Ceitlin, Israel Odyssey Greenwich, Jewish Riverside Old Greenwich

Last Sunday, the Jewish teen community gathered once again for the second installment of the Israel Odyssey series directed by Rabbi Boruch and Chaya Ceitlin, a project of Jewish Riverside Old Greenwich, and Chabad of Greenwich, catering exclusively to high school students in the area.

The event, titled “My Israel Story,” featured a lineup of powerful TED Talks where speakers shared their personal experiences about Israel and being Jewish. Each talk was short yet impactful, offering a glimpse into the diverse perspectives within the community.

Attendees were treated to a lineup of inspiring presenters all originally and currently from Greenwich, including Ezra Messer who served in the IDF.  Messer shared insights from his journey, from growing up in Greenwich to serving in the IDF Gaza operation and the lessons he had learned.

Stella Maymin reflected on her high school experience post-October 7, and how she spoke up to address anti-Semitic issues and support her community.

Andrew Finkelstein, a student at William and Mary, discussed first-hand experiences of anti-Semitism on his college campus and the support he had been receiving from Muslim friends after October 7.

Abe Milgram, a Greenwich Country Day School student, shared his volunteer trip to the towns attacked on October 7 and the importance of taking action.

Zoe Burian, the founder of Startup Reserves which provides professional services to Israel’s startup workforce, talked about navigating difficult situations on social media and the importance of raising one’s voice.

Rabbi Yossi Deren also provided valuable insights on the history of the land and how to internalize our connection to it, adding depth to the discussions.

In addition to the enlightening talks, participants had the opportunity to contribute to a meaningful cause by baking Rachel’s Cookies. Rachel Edry’s home was invaded by terrorists on October 7. In an effort to save herself and her husband, she began to speak to and calm the terrorists, serving them coffee and cookies. Her brilliance and quick thinking saved her and her husband’s life. The proceeds from the sale of these cookies will go towards supporting displaced Israelis, inspired by Rachel’s courageous act on October 7.

Sadly, the following day after the cookie bake, the news came that Rachel’s husband David had passed.

Attendees also indulged in a delicious full-on brunch spread.

The event served as a platform for dialogue, reflection, and action, reinforcing the community’s commitment to supporting Israel and standing up against anti-Semitism.

The Israel Odyssey Series is a collaborative effort aimed at providing transformative experiences for high school students in Greenwich. Through engaging discussions, hands-on activities, and community initiatives, the series seeks to deepen understanding and foster unity within the community.
