PHOTO: Skies Clear for 11th Annual Howl & Prowl on Greenwich Ave

Pet Pantry’s 11th annual Howl & Prowl benefiting Adopt A Dog was the perfect Sunday afternoon as skies cleared following Saturday’s Nor’easter.

Hundreds of dogs and their humans gathered by the Havemeyer building for some costume fun, and the competition was stiff.

Pet Pantry created Howl and Prowl in 2008, and the event has become a staple town event ever since.

There were a total of 8 prizes awarded for categories including creativity and audience appeal. Winners received a total of about $600.

First place went to a couple who had a simple concept involving temporary dog friendly dye.

Shawn and Bill Herr traveled to Greenwich from Madison, CT with their dogs Lady Gaga and Tilly.

Shawn said she used OPAWZ, a brand of dye safe for dogs to transform both toy poodles into a giraffe and zebra respectively.

“They have permanent dye and dye that will fade away,” Shawn said. “This will stay until Thanksgiving.”

In addition to the costume contest, Pet Pantry hosted their “Bone Bar” with assorted treats for dogs.

There were photos courtesy of noted international portrait photography outfit Venture Photography, caricature drawings by artist Bill Hernandez, countless samples and giveaways by pet manufacturer sponsors, food trucks, face painting and other fun endeavors. Families also enjoyed balloon animals available for “adoption.”

Howl and Prowl’s leading sponsor for the event was Blue Buffalo.

“Since 2008, Pet Pantry’s Howl & Prowl Parade has raised much-needed funds to support the work we do at the shelter,” said Adopt-A-Dog Executive director Kristen Alouisa who served as a costume contest judge.

“Our life-saving impact has increased as a result of this partnership, and we are truly grateful to be the exclusive beneficiary of this incredibly fun and enjoyable event. Pet Pantry Warehouse goes above and beyond to give back to the community, and we are beyond thankful for their generosity and support,” Alouisa said.
