This September, Greenwich Library will present an insightful lecture on the historic banning and subsequent liberation of James Joyce’s Ulysses.
This lecture, which will take place on Tuesday, September 24 at 7:00pm in the Marx Family Black Box Theater, will also explore the case’s profound impact on American censorship laws and literary freedom.
Registration is required and available through the Library’s online calendar.
Join Jesse Meyers for a look at the banning of James Joyce’s serialized Ulysses in 1921 and the extraordinary follow up trial in 1933 which led to the removal of the ban and stunning changes in how American courts define censorship ever since. The court decision impacted the future works of a galaxy of major authors including Salinger, Mailer, Nabokov, Bellow, Morrison, Roth, Bradbury, Rushdie, and many, many others.
Banned Books Week (September 22-28) is supported by the American Library Association. The 2024 theme is Freed Between the Lines.
Jesse Meyers has been studying, teaching, and lecturing on the works of Joyce since retiring from newsletter-publishing in 1994. He has taught classes on Joyce at the Irish Consulate in NYC, at Barnes & Noble in NYC and at Fairfield University, the State University of New York at Purchase and – for seven years – at NYU’s School of Continuing Education. He has lectured on Joyce before public and private organizations in the US, Canada, Ireland, France and Switzerland. More than 7,000 viewers have watched Jesse’s 2022 lecture at Greenwich Library on the vast cultural impact of Joyce’s epic novel, Ulysses.
Meyers will also lead a three-week literary series starting Monday, October 7 at 12:15 p.m. at Greenwich Library which looks at James Joyce’s Life (Monday, October 7), James Joyce’s Poetry and Limericks (Monday, October 21), and the Global Cultural Impact of James Joyce’s Works (Monday, October 28).
