On Tuesday, Mothers for Others volunteers distributed a record number of diapers at a community diaper distribution in the parking lot of Wilbur Peck. A total of 7,445 diapers were given away, with each family in attendance receiving a one-week supply of diapers for each child under three. Families also received a package of wipes and a tube of diaper cream while supplies lasted.
Close to one in three American families struggle to afford enough diapers to keep their child healthy and no government program provides diapers as an essential need for babies.
“Diaper need has increased as prices for diapers, groceries and other essentials have gone up,” said Elizabeth Peyton, Executive Director of Mothers for Others. “Parents contact us every week asking for assistance with diapers. The one week supply we provide helps alleviate the financial burden families are facing in a small way.”
Mothers for Others provided local families with 275,000+ diapers in 2022, including over 32,000 distributed through community diaper distributions.
Diaper distributions are staffed by Mothers for Others staff and volunteers who bring carloads of diapers to central locations, such as affordable housing complexes, to distribute diapers.
“All are welcome at our distribution events and attendees can receive information about how to receive diapers on an ongoing basis,” Peyton said. “We don’t ask questions or collect names at our community distributions, this is about providing diapers to every child who needs them.”
Mothers for Others was founded in 2011 by a group of mothers in Greenwich, Connecticut to provide support to families in need and has since become the largest independent diaper bank in Fairfield County.
