Continuing Ed Course: Online Newspaper Resources for Nostalgia Lovers, History Buffs & Genealogists

newspapersJaneen Bjork, who presented a well-attended talk on the history of the newspaper industry at the Retired Men’s Association in January is teaching a new class for Greenwich Adult & Continuing Education on Wednesdays, February 17 – February 24, 2016 + two bonus labs

Learn the best practices for utilizing online newspaper resources from veteran TV researcher Janeen Bjork.

There will be lectures, a handout, hands-on instruction and access to the instructor’s subscription sites.

The first class will begin with an explanation of OCR (Optical Character Recognition), the technology that allows newspapers to be scanned, digitized and indexed.

It is estimated that OCR has an error rate of about 20%, and that the missed characters keep most researchers from finding the majority of what they’re looking for in historical newspapers.

Classes will be held from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Greenwich High School 10 Hillside Road Greenwich, CT 06830. Fee $49.

ADDED VALUE: Two bonus labs in the Technology Training Center of the Greenwich Library on Thursday, February 18th from 3-3:55 p.m. and Saturday, January 20th from 11-11:55 a.m. For more details and to register click here.
