Up at Augustine’s Farm, Kathy and John report that this spring they’ve had a hard time with the fields. The temps have been decent for planting, but they have had more rain than usual and a tremendous amount of wind, which snapped rows of tomato plants.
“Most people don’t understand how vulnerable young plants are in those kind of situations,” Kathy said. “John would have one field ready to plant and it would rain and harden the soil again, so, we just dry it out and wait for the best conditions. We are always cautious because we raise all our field plants.”
All that said, Kathy and John are geared up for the season. Field plants are thriving and the farm looks great.
During our visit on June 13, the Kohlrabi was thriving in a raised bed, alongside the Roly-Poly Zucchini. The farm stand will open June 24th, 9:00am – 5:00pm
Customers can expect to find spinach Swiss Chard, lettuces, broccoli and luscious salad in raised beds.Kathy said she hopes to have local strawberries as well.
