YWCA Shares Statement on Roe v Wade Leaked Supreme Court Opinion

YWCA Greenwich Statement On Roe v Wade Leaked Opinion:

The leaked draft opinion from the U.S. Supreme Court—now authenticated by Chief Justice John Roberts—suggests that the Court plans to overturn the landmark Roe v Wade decision.

YWCA Greenwich is devastated by this news. We know that the right to an abortion has affirmed for almost a half century that women and those who experience pregnancy should have agency over their bodies and their futures. For YWCAs across the country, this threat to reproductive healthcare is a threat to gender and racial justice.

Overturning Roe will have particularly devastating consequences for young women, especially young women of color, as well as victims of domestic violence who experience forms of control that impact reproductive choice.

Access to safe, affordable, and accessible abortion care has given young women the opportunity to invest in their education, training, vocations, and careers. Without this access, women could be pushed out of the workplace and their educational and career trajectories limited. The lifelong consequences will be felt not only by them, but by their families and communities as well. Being able to decide if and when to have children has been and should remain a constitutional right.

While we are proud that Connecticut plans to expand abortion rights, we know that threats to reproductive health anywhere make us all vulnerable to losing our rights.

We will continue to stand with women and all those who experience pregnancy who are frightened and confused about this news, and we will uphold our mission to eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all.
