GHS Social Studies Dept Holds Black History Month Essay Contest

The Greenwich High School Social Studies Dept is holding a Black History Month essay contest.

At GHS, students study the Civil Rights Movement in history class as a time when Americans fought for equal protection under the law, social justice, and voting rights. These themes are important in expanding understanding of our nation’s history, yet, relatively few leaders of the Movement are highlighted for their work.

This year, the Greenwich High School Social Studies Department invites students to spotlight unsung heroes in the nation’s quest for equality.

In celebration of Black History Month, GHS students are invited to nominate a Black individual – dead or alive – who they believe should be included in the curriculum for American History who has been overlooked.

GHS students should write a 500 word letter to the Board of Education explaining why their nominee should be included in the GHS American History Curriculum.

  • The letter must be research-based.
  • Students must explain and defend why the nominee should be included in the curriculum.
  • The letter must include a rationale on why the hero has been overlooked and explain how
learning about this individual would enhance student understanding of this time period.
  • Students must submit works consulted illustrating their research in MLA format to illustrate their
scholarship (submissions with less than four sources will not be accepted)
  • … Remember, the audience is the Board of Education
