The Children’s School is passionate in its belief there is no higher calling than to be a teacher of young children. Thus, since it was founded some 60 years ago, the School has been a practitioner of the Japanese proverb, “Better than a thousand days of diligent study is one day with a great teacher.”
For the young, the teacher is everything—the one who opens the door to the larger world, encourages their curiosity and openness, and makes them feel understood and valued as learners. The first step for a great teacher is to earn a child’s trust, which the The Children’s School staff accomplishes by showing unfailing warmth and attentiveness as well as using thoughtful language in every daily interaction with their students.
Trained in techniques that promote both a strong rapport with their students and a carefully prepared, orderly and calm classroom environment, The Children’s School teachers invite children at every turn to become independent learners, thinkers and problem-solvers. They do so by stepping back and serving as gentle guides while students immerse themselves in a universe of learning materials; individual and group lessons in literacy, mathematics and science; and free or imaginative play, which is the “work” of all children because it cultivates concentration, cooperation with others and creativity. Importantly, our teachers also model the value of respect for all and discuss with students what it means to be a friend, a good neighbor and a responsible citizen.
“Our teachers, I am proud to say, are able to understand ‘the whole child’ because of their sharp powers of observation, a deep knowledge of child development and wisdom born of experience,” said Maureen Murphy, head of The Children’s School. “They listen carefully to students. They pay close attention to how individual children behave when learning, doing and socializing.
From this treasure trove of information comes a comprehensive, personalized learning program for each child, one that is crafted to reflect a thorough understanding of a student so the teachers can meet every child where they are while encouraging them to stretch towards the next step.
“By supporting continuing education and training for teachers,” Maureen Murphy said. “TCS has been able to create a learning environment where children feel safe and nurtured because they are understood, able to forge meaningful connections to others and have teachers dedicated to their full flourishing.”
