GPD Catch Up with “Kia Challenge” Suspect from 2023 after Bounty Hunter Delivers

On Wednesday a bounty hunter brought a man to Greenwich Police headquarters who was wanted for Failure to Appear in court stemming from an original report that a vehicle crashed into a residence in the area of Field Point Road on April 28, 2023.

The suspect was Anthony Izaac Alicea, 22, of Bronx, NY.

At the time of the April 28 incident, four occupants of a Kia fled the scene on foot but were soon taken into custody with the assistance of the Greenwich Police Department’s drone and the Westport Police Departments K9 Officer.

Officers related that the gray Kia, which was bearing New York plates, had its column broken similar to the “Kia Challenge.”

The Kia Challenge is a Tik Tok trend that teaches and encourages people to steal Kias or Hyundais by prying apart the steering column and exposing the ignition. Then then use a USB stick “thumb drive” to start the vehicle.

Police said the airbags had all deployed except for the steering wheel airbag.

Greenwich Police dispatch contacted the New York Police Department who related that they had made contact with the registered owner of the vehicle and it was determined the car had been stolen.

The suspect, Anthony Izaac Alicea, 22, of Bronx, NY missed his court appearance on Feb 5, 2024.

Police arrested Mr. Alicea and charged him with Failure to Appear 1st degree. His bond was set at $100,000, which he was unable to post.

He now has a court date in Stamford on May 1, 2024.

The Greenwich Police reminds residents, if they see anything suspicious at any time of day, to contact the Dispatch Center at 203-622-8004 (24hrs) and ensure that the keys and fobs are removed from vehicles as car thieves continue to come to Greenwich regularly.
