Driver at Local School Charged with DUI Had Expired Adult Learner Permit

On April 5 Greenwich Police were called to 184 Hamilton Avenue – the address associated with Hamilton Avenue School – to check the welfare of an adult who had just driven to the school and was showing signs of driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.

Police said that when officers arrived witnesses told them that the person, identified as Maria Rivas, had admitted to taking oxycodone earlier in the day and that while she was waiting for a scheduled school meeting she was nearly falling asleep.

Video surveillance and the person’s own admission corroborated the staff’s claims.

Ms Rivas did not perform standardized field sobriety tests to standard. Later investigation  revealed that Ms Rivas had an expired adult learner permit.

She was charge with Driving under the Influence of Alcohol/Drugs and Driving without a License.

She has a date in Stamford Superior Court on April 19, 2024.
