Alert Firefighters Rescue Child Who Stopped Breathing

On Tuesday afternoon Greenwich Fire Department’s Engine One happened to be waiting at a red light on Mason Street when a driver flagged down the crew to say a child inside her vehicle had stopped breathing.

On board the fire truck were Lt. Erik Maziarz and firefighters Christopher Kelly and Adam Jakubowski.

The crew on Engine One immediately began resuscitation, and since they were just two blocks from the Hospital, the crew made the decision to drive the child to the emergency room.

Prior to arriving at the emergency room the child began breathing again. The child was turned over into the care of Greenwich Hospital.

According to Greenwich Police Dept public information officer, John Slusarz, “It’s all about the right person, at the right place at the right time, with the right training and the right equipment.”

“For the fire department it worked out,” Slusarz said. “Whether you’re a dispatcher, a medic or a police officer, we’re always training and using our equipment to make sure everything is working well. In this case, everything just came together.”
