Mary Stephenson Zygmont, 82

Mary Stephenson Zygmont of Glenville died on June 20, 2018 after a lengthy battle with cancer at the age of 82. She was born on April 21, 1936 to William and Jean Murdoch.

Her childhood was spent in Bedford, NY and in Round Hill. She was born in Greenwich Hospital and attended the Greenwich Public School system.

She married Joseph T. Zygmont on March 2, 1957 in Glenville where they lived in a house they built together until his death in 1995. When their daughters were older, she took a job at the YWCA in Greenwich. Starting in the Playroom and working her way up to supervising the Playroom and 1-2-3  Grow Program.

After many years of rewarding service to the YW, the First Selectman deemed 11/16/98 “Mary Zygmont Day” with a plaque and ceremony. She retired after 27 years at the YW to begin her battle with cancer.

As Mary always said “she never wanted to leave her beloved second family at the YW”.

Mary had a compassionate and caring soul. She spent her life doing for others and was always putting others first. Nothing was a crisis, she was always calm. Her goal was to make the world a happy place, especially for children. Birds, gardening, sewing, baking, and taking the Island Beach Boat for a ride were her passions when she wasn’t caring for others.

The family would like to extend its gratitude to the many doctors, nurses and clergy at Greenwich Hospital who provided her care with compassion, especially Dr. Hollister who gave us many extra years with her.

She is predeceased by her husband Joseph Zygmont, brother Bill Murdoch, and Sister Jane Duthie. Survived by her daughters and cherished son-in-laws Gail and Nelson Beers, Nancy and Frank Barbato, Lynn and David Cohen, and Valerie Zygmont and Jon Bufithis. She is also survived by her grandchildren Nelson Beers III, Warren Beers, Olivia Dermody, Mina Cohen, Gwen Cohen and Summer Bufithis and great grandchildren Julie and Coraline Beers. Mary has many loving nieces and nephews and extended family and countless friends who will miss her bright smile.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to The YWCAGreenwich, Attn: Childcare Program, 259 E Putnam Ave, Greenwich, CT 06830.

Relatives and friends are invited to Coxe & Graziano Funeral Home for visiting hours on Sunday, June 24 from 2:00-4:00pm and 6:00-8:00pm. A final service before burial will take place at Coxe & Graziano on Monday, June 25 at 10:00am.

All are welcome to cherish memories and celebrate Mary’s life at a reception afterwards at the YWCA Greenwich.
