Selectmen Approve Road Closure for St Roch’s Feast

Thursday’s Board of Selectmen meeting featured a second read for a temporary road closure on St Roch Ave so the St Roch’s Church feast can spread out into the street as they have in the past. The feast dates are Friday, August 15; Saturday, August 16; and Sunday, August 17.

Friday is opening night featuring food, vendors, rides for kids and live entertainment beginning at 5:00pm, according to the current church bulletin.

Saturday’s event runs 11:00am to 11:00pm. Highlights will include the procession at 3:00pm and raffle at 11:00pm. Sunday is billed as a ‘delicious finale,’ with breakfast served after the 7:30am and 10:00am masses and an international lunch after the 12:00pm mass.

This year’s feast is complicated by the fact the church does not have access to the Hamilton Avenue School parking deck or fields for carnival rides as they have in the past because the school parking garage is undergoing major repairs that will likely require two summers to reach total completion.

Construction fencing was erected at the end of June, and the campus is closed for the summer.  According to the GPS Capital Projects update, the project is likely to require two summers to reach total completion.

The road closure will allow the feast committee to place tables and chairs in the roadway as they have in the past. The church campus includes a field across Hamilton Avenue, as the corner of Stone Ave, which will also be utilized.

St Roch Ave is closed in the evenings for several nights every August for the St Roch feast.

Greenwich Police master technician Roger Drenth told the Selectmen that that after speaking with the project foreman, a decision was made to close off at Hamilton Avenue as in past years, and close off at Alexander Street, but only for southbound traffic.

Drenth said there will be signs at Holly Hill announcing, ‘road closure ahead,’ and trucks will come in and out on the northbound side from Alexander into the lot and back. The road will also be closed just south of that so nobody can come into where the feast is taking place in the middle of the road.

“Once they get done with their work – I did check to them before I came here today – they may break a little early and then the feast can move all the way up to Alexander and have the whole road.”

“That’s what we figured,” First Selectman Camillo said. “Thanks for seeing to it and putting it in writing. The feast is a big deal to the parish and to the town.”

Selectperson Janet Stone McGuigan asked whether there was sign off from the police department and Town Risk Manager Megan Damato.

“Megan Damato said she would endorse whatever Chief Heavey signed off on,” said Ken Borsuk, executive assistant to Mr. Camillo.

“I’m here on his behalf,” Drenth said.

McGuigan also asked if tables would be set up in the roadway, which Drenth confirmed.

McGuigan said in the past alcohol was supposed to just be  consumed on the church property but there was “indulging” on school property.

“I’m wondering if there would be more prominent signage this year about where people can and cannot consume,” she asked.

“I can take care of that being it is my parish, and Father Lenox is here,” Camillo said. “We’ll certainly make sure, usually what happens is we have a beer table and a wine table. I usually work at the beer booth. Most people stay there, but unfortunately sometimes people will trickle across the street if they see a friend.”

“And somebody sent pictures to one of the online publications two years ago and that became a big thing and a political thing. We want to make sure that people are aware of that,” he added.

Drenth said officers working at the event can advise people to go back to the drinking area if they stray.

Drenth confirmed no rides would be in the streets.

Camillo said rides will be on church property including the field at the corner of Stone Ave and Hamilton Avenue.
