Greenwich Police to Hold Public Hearing on School Zone Speed Camera Program
A pubic hearing about the town’s school zone speed camera program will be held Thursday, May 14, at 7:00pm in the Town Hall Meeting Room.
The program began issuing live citations on November 19, 2025, following a warning period that started on October 20, 2025. The first batch of cameras included Central Middle School, Glenville School, Greenwich Academy, Eagle Hill, North Street School, Parkway School. Cameras were added to Greenwich High School with citations beginning in December 2025. Violations re $50 for the first offense and $75 thereafter.
The program was halted on April 2 after a review found that the initial approval process, required by state statute, was not fully completed.

The new state law requires a public hearing. It also must go before the town legislative body, which is the RTM. On April 27 on WGCH Greenwich Police Chief Heavey said after the safety plan proposal is formally presented on May 14, it will then go to the RTM in June for approval before going to the state for review.
From there, Heavey said hopefully the program will be reactivated in time for the start of the new school year.
Heavey emphasized that no one was issued a violation unless they were traveling 11 miles over the speed limit in a school zone.

In his May 8 Community Connections from Fred, Selectman Camillo said the meeting will be about the town’s safety plan – not about the contract, the vendor (Blue Line) or refunds. He said the informational meeting will satisfy the state’s requirement for a public hearing.
After an intro from Camillo, JD Smith will present the information along with Jim Michel from DPW.
The meeting is in person and will be live on GCTV on cable and on GCTV youtube live. (No Zoom option).
Camillo’s May 8 e-blast continued: “This will be information only about where the cameras have been already installed. We are not installing new speed cameras at this time. And while the program is currently suspended, it will be brought back after some tweaks to respond to resident concerns and ensure we are meeting all the requirements in the State legislation.”
He added that the May 14 session will not be about the contract with the outside vendor.
“We are not doing this to talk about the vendor, the contract or any potential refunds for tickets,” he said. “The focus will be entirely on the State legislation that authorized this program and our safety plan.”
Copies of the safety plan will be available at the May 14 hearing.
