Greenwich Celebrates Completion of the Wesskum Wood Rd Bridge Project with Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony

The Town of Greenwich Department of Public Works celebrated the successful completion of the Wesskum Wood Road Bridge project on Wednesday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Binney Park, next to the newly constructed bridge.

The Wesskum Wood Road Bridge, originally built in 1950, had experienced significant wear, necessitating a full replacement.

According to a release from DPW, in addition to the bridge replacement, the project included several enhancements to improve safety, accessibility, and aesthetics.

New features include decorative crosswalks, a sidewalk along the bridge interior, a path connecting to the Binney Park trail, ADA-compliant pedestrian ramps, and a widened roadway shoulder to better accommodate bicyclists.

The new design preserves the bridge’s original aesthetic by utilizing natural stones with deep joints and flat capstone to complement the scenic surroundings.

New landscaping was also added to harmonize with the park’s natural beauty.

Project construction began on July 5, 2023, and the roadway was opened as scheduled on July 1, 2024. The Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) technique was utilized to reduce road closure time and reduce inconvenience to residents.

Construction plans were prepared by Stantec of New Haven, CT, with A Vitti of Stamford, CT, serving as the primary contractor. Project oversight was provided by Town of Greenwich DPW staff, including Gabriella Circosta Cohee, P.E., Chief Engineer, and Finton Sweeney, Civil Engineer I.

The Wesskum Wood Road Bridge project exemplifies the Town’s commitment to enhancing public infrastructure while preserving the area’s historic charm and providing essential connectivity and safety improvements for all road and park users.
