Gas Leaf Blower Ban Take Effect May 24; Public Hearing Announced for Extended Time for Town Properties to Comply

It’s almost time for Greenwich’s first summer without the ROAR of gas leaf blowers.

Starting at 6:00pm on May 24, the use of gas-powered leaf blowers will not be allowed on residential properties. This restriction will be in effect until September 30, though residential properties more than two acres will have the option of using gas-powered leaf blowers if they want to starting after Labor Day.

Electric leaf blowers are allowed and in fact encouraged.

The restriction is on gas-powered leaf blowers only, and starting in 2025, people in violation could be subject to a fine of $100 for a first offense and $249 for subsequent offenses.

People can call (203) 622-8006 to report violations while the restrictions are in effect.

People are only allowed to use one leaf blower per ¼ an acre of property.

Landscapers are not allowed to use leaf blowers on any Sundays throughout the year.

Possible Extension for Town of Greenwich Properties
Notice of Public Hearing

There will be a public hearing at the Board of Selectmen meeting this Thursday, April 25, where members of the public will be able to comment on a proposed variance that would give the Town of Greenwich more time to transition to battery-operated leaf blowers and comply with the new regulations.

That variance would only cover Town-owned properties, not private property.

During the hearing, the public will be allowed to speak both in person and via Zoom on the proposed variance for the Town of Greenwich for provision 6B-6 (e)(6) of Chapter 6B Noise Ordinance.

The meeting will begin at 10:00am in the town hall meeting room, as well as via Zoom.  It will also be on GCTV and live streamed on the GCTV  YouTube channel.

In the meantime Quiet Yards Greenwich shared a flyer residents can circulate to landscapers who may be unaware of the new rules for leaf blowers.
