Alpen Pantry has new owners. Many will recognize Drew Nemetz’s name, as he grew up locally in Havemeyer Park. In fact he is a member of the Greenwich High School class of 2000. Nemetz and his wife Frannie took over the Alpen Pantry business last October and opened in December.
The couple decided to maintain the existing selection of sandwiches that drew people to the Old Greenwich sandwich shop for decades. Not only has the menu stayed in tact, but the delicious bread comes from the same local baker as it has for 40 years. But, Nemetz said, the baker’s name is a secret.
While much has stayed the same, a new vegetarian sandwich has been added.
On Friday, Greenwich First Selectman Fred Camillo, its namesake, headed to Arcadia Road to nosh on the sandwich named after him.
“The Fred,” (This reporter ordered hers on black bread) featuring cucumber, alfalfa sprouts, shredded carrots, tomato, pickled red onion and house made dill & minced onion dressing, is truly delicious.
Nemetz said he had worked in the restaurant business for 20 years, including in New York City, Chicago and New Haven, but was delighted to now work so close to home.
“The reception has been amazing,” he said as customers streamed through the doors.
Camillo explained the origin of The Fred sandwich.
“Drew’s wife Frannie reached out to me and said they’d just opened up two months earlier, and that they’d like to name a sandwich after me, and asked what I eat,” Camillo recalled. “I said I don’t eat meat, but it’s all vegetables, and I’ve heard from everybody that they love it.”
“I’ve been hearing people talk about this place so much,” he added. “They have great food here.”
Other popular sandwiches include the Gobbler, with turkey breast 1/4 lb, lettuce, tomato and a unique Russian dressing on black bread or a hard roll.
Nemetz said they plan to add delivery in the future, but for now, customers can call ahead to order sandwiches and come in for pick-up.
