Representative Rachel Khanna is a Strong Advocate for CT Students

Submitted by Ali Ghiorse, Greenwich

I am writing to express my full support for Rachel Khanna’s re-election as state representative of the 149th district, based on her steadfast advocacy for School Meals For All. Providing nutritious balanced meals, equitably accessible to all school children, is one of the most significant food security safety nets our state can provide, and a critically important investment in our society.

Rachel’s advocacy is making a significant impact on students’ well-being and academic success. In the 2023 session, Rachel voted to use ARPA funds to provide free breakfasts for all students and free school meals to students eligible for free and reduced lunch for the school year. Her advocacy is on par with a national trend. So far eight states provide no cost school meals to all students, with roughly 24 states in discussion or negotiation.

According to a recent report by Feeding America, one out of every six children in Connecticut is food insecure. In Greenwich, roughly 29% of our community are considered Asset Limited Income Constrained Employed (ALICE) and 7% are at or below the poverty line. In Stamford, it’s even higher, with 42% of its community ALICE. These statistics underscore the urgent need for initiatives like School Meals For All because they are proven to address the unprecedented levels of food insecurity by supporting ALICE families who are not eligible for free and reduced meals.

Consider this, in order for a family to qualify for free and reduced lunch they can earn no more than $55,000 a year, however, according to data from the Greenwich United Way it takes an income of $151,000 a year for a family of four to make ends meet. School Meals For All assures all parents, especially those who are financially strained and do not have access to federal or state benefits, that their children will have access to warm nutritious meals everyday.

School Meals For All is an essential step towards ensuring that no student goes hungry while trying to learn. Rachel Khanna’s dedication to addressing food insecurity and promoting the health and nutrition of Connecticut’s students is commendable.

I urge my fellow community members to join me in supporting Rachel Khanna’s re-election so she can continue her vital work on behalf of food equity for all Connecticut students.
