Raabe: Broken Windows, BOE Litigation and FOIA. Should we be paying for this?

Submitted by Brian Raabe, Greenwich

A FOIA request has been submitted to the Town Clerk for copies of all bills related to the BOE litigation, as well as their payment status.

Who knows what they will total.

Admittedly, when we are talking about $60 million dollar swimming pools it is probably small ball in comparison.

But I think Rudy Guiliani was right, the idea being that if you take the small things seriously, like broken windows, they do not become big things.

In the case of the First Selectman’s decision to pursue legal action against the BOE (same BOE that brought you a record 10 schools named “Schools of Distinction” by Connecticut for the 2024-2025 school year) legal action against THAT BOE, with no thorough public explanation as to why it continues, to some maybe that is a small thing.

But there is no end in sight – it will become, if it has not already, a big thing in terms of legal bills you the reader are paying.

It may not be a $60 million dollar swimming pool, but questionable judgement that propagates drains money from more productive uses.

Let’s get this into the light of day.

I do regret wasting Town staff time getting this together, but it shouldn’t be a heavy lift.

And one wouldn’t have thought a FOIA request would be needed.

But here we are.

Let’s find out together how much money has already been spent.

Maybe then the First Selectman will tell us why, and importantly – why he wants to spend more in a planned full YEAR of BOE litigation ahead.

Here’s the calendar:

Should we be paying for this?
