Letter: Noise Levels from Skeet Shooting at Greenwich Country Club Violate Neighbors Right to Peaceful Habitation

Submitted by Neighbors Against Noise

Finally. Peace and Quiet.

What a relief! Skeet Shooting season is over at Greenwich Country Club and we can now be out from under the tyranny of the noise every Saturday and Sunday all day long. Bang. Bang. Bang. No space is safe from the racket — not in the park, not in the house, and certainly not in your own yard. Ever think of having a nice cup of coffee with a friend, converse with a family member, or just enjoy reading a nice book? Well, think again! Greenwich Country Club has deemed this time theirs without regard to their neighbors.

Not everyone hears the same level of noise. Some residents hear the shooting in the distance, but some residents hear it loudly within their homes. Imagine living near the Club with a child who has sensory issues, a partner with PTSD or a pet that is afraid to go outdoors. Twenty-two weekends of the year Greenwich Country Club continues this practice without considering the impact on the surrounding neighborhoods and the health and wellbeing of residents.

Neighbors against Noise have been petitioning the Town to stop this practice within Central Greenwich. There are places conveniently located and easily accessible outside of town, including the Round Hill Club and Millbrook Rod & Gun Club where people can practice without inflicting this high decibel impulse noise on their neighbors.

Back in 1993 Greenwich Country Club agreed to cut back the practice to Saturdays. The Club has since abrogated that agreement and the shooting continues now beginning in October all the way through to the very end of March. With two shooting ranges that allows ten shooters total, an almost continuous shooting noise at a high decibel issues from the Club every Saturday and Sunday four months of the year.

The noise is heard from Mianus Park to Millbrook and two miles away on Mianus Terrace inside the house! By allowing this unhealthy environment to go unchecked the Town disregards the welfare and health of the people living within range of this noise. These noise levels violate the right to peaceful habitation of premises for every resident within earshot of the range.

The range is less than a quarter-mile away from Central Middle School, Greenwich Christian Preschool, Greenwich Reform Synagogue, Greenwich Country Day Schools, St. Agnes Church, Pomerance and Pinetum Parks and it has a negative impact on the experience of persons utilizing those institutions.

Thank heavens the skeet shooting season is over and that the noise has stopped. Neighbors against Noise don’t want the Town to allow Greenwich Country Club to continue disrupting the health and wellness of the community in the fall.
