Seen Around Byram: Half a House and Half a Car

The saga of a longtime blighted property on William Street is coming to a close.

For a century what looked like a two-family house was actually two properties – 14 and 16 William Street – with separate owners since being constructed around 1900.

Over time neighbors complained of blight as the porch, steps and walls of #14 collapsed, and sections of the roof were gaping open.

The fact that the two properties were attached and #14 encroached onto #16 by about 51 square feet hindered resolution of many issues.

The essence of a P&Z application proposing a new two-family house at #14 with parking in the front boiled down to the dilemma undoing the encroachment from #14 onto #16.

Now that the two houses are separated and #14 is demolished and being replaced with a new two-family home, #16 has his freedom on its own .0530 acre.

Only one question remains. Where’s the front door?

Just down the hill on South Water Street over the weekend a half a car, literally sliced in two horizontally, was spotted by neighbors on Saturday.

Based on the scrape marks leading to the mysterious half car, it appeared to have been dragged out of the former HASCO factory.

Neighbors called police and on Sunday, Captain Mark Zuccerella confirmed the car had been towed away by Sunday night.

Anyone missing half their car?
