Greenwich St. Patrick’s Parade by the Greenwich Hibernian Association on Saturday evening, March 8, at the organization’s annual St. Patrick’s dinner dance.

Father Murphy born and raised in Stamford. He attended St. Mary Stamford for grade-school until it closed after 6th grade.

From there he attended Burdick Middle school, then on to Stamford High, graduating in 1979. Following High School he worked for Pitney Bowes as a postage meter repairman. In 1989 he entered the St. John Fischer seminary residence and continued his education to earn a bachelor degree at Sacred Heart University, then to Major Seminary at Immaculate Conception Seminary at Seton Hall.

His Irish heritage is on his father’s side. His grandfather Philip Murphy Sr. immigrated from New Ross, Co. Wexford, and his grandmother, Margaret Carey migrated from Kilkenny.

They met in Brooklyn and married. They later moved to Greenwich. His parents, Philip Murphy Jr. and Betty (Rossillo) Murphy also had another son named Philip and three daughters, Elizabeth, Rosemary, and Margaret.

Father Murphy was ordained a priest in 1996 at St. Augustine Cathedral in Bridgeport by then, Bishop Edward Egan. His first assignment was St. Thomas the Apostle in Norwalk, after that St. Cecilia in Stamford, then as pastor he was assigned to St. Theresa in Trumbull followed by being made pastor of Our Lady of Peace in Stratford, In 2014 he was assigned to St. Michael parish in Greenwich.

He has held the position as chaplain of the Police Dept of Trumbull and presently serves as chaplain of the Greenwich Police Dept and the Greenwich Knights of Columbus. Father considers it a great honor to be asked by the Greenwich Hibernians to be the Grand Marshal of the St. Patrick’s Parade. He has many fond memories of attending the parade as a child with his father and siblings. He also remembers how important this event was for his godfather and uncle Dennis Murphy.

Father Murphy has come to love being reacquainted with and serve the community of Greenwich, the town of his father’s youth.

As a Catholic priest Father is especially glad to play a role in an event that celebrates one of the great saints of Ireland, a land and culture he came to know and love through his father’s side of the family in their pride and in visiting that beautiful country.
