Daughters of the American Revolution Invite All to their “Massing of the Colors”

The Connecticut Daughters of the American Revolution invite the public to attend their 53rd annual “Massing of the Colors” on Saturday, October 21 at 2:00 pm at the United Methodist Church, 165 South Avenue, New Canaan.  A 3:00 reception will follow.

“The Massing of the Colors” is a longstanding tradition among Connecticut’s many patriotic and lineage societies, more than 50 of which are slated to appear for this year’s event.

“I would describe the ‘Massing’ as a fun and colorful ‘pledge of allegiance’ to America,” said Linda Tavlarios, CTDAR’s State Chaplain, from Darien. “It is intended to be an uplifting, non-partisan show of support for American ideals and principles.”

The Massing of the Colors’ location and host changes every year to various sites throughout the state of Connecticut.  Founded and hosted by lineage societies, such as Daughters of the American Revolution, Sons of the American Revolution, the Mayflower Society, and Colonial Dames of America.  Although, it has traditionally been attended by descendants of early immigrants to America, the event has expanded over the years to include all organizations dedicated to upholding patriotic traditions.

“The Massing is for everyone,” said Alice Ridgway, a native of New Canaan, who currently serves as the State Regent of the Connecticut DAR.

“What a wonderful way to join with like-minded Americans in expressing our gratitude and support for all we have inherited from those who came before us,” she said. “It also serves as a reminder that we have a duty to understand our own history, to preserve and defend our Constitution, and to pass on America’s unique history and values to the next generation.”

The spectacle of many flags from the dozens of participating organizations, with stirring “pipes and drums” music tributes, drummers, and bagpipers, is expected to draw a large crowd to New Canaan’s Methodist Church on Oct. 21, but ample parking is available behind the church.  No advanced notice is required to attend.

Organizations wishing to participate should contact Linda Tavlarios, chaplain@ctdar.org.
