Annual YWCA Greenwich Annual Coretta Scott and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Event: The Evolution of Gender

On Tuesday, January 25 at 7:00 pm, YWCA Greenwich and more than forty community partners will host the 2022 Coretta Scott and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Annual Conversation. This event, held each January around Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Day, commemorates the lives and legacy of Dr. King and his wife, Coretta Scott King by exploring a contemporary topic about which we believe they would have cared deeply.

This year’s conversation, The Evolution of Gender, will explore the evolution and expansiveness of gender. Our panelists will examine the history and language of gender, as well as the importance of developing gender-affirming practices and policies that center the LGBTQ+ community.

Participating in this virtual event are Erin O. Crosby, Director of Women’s Empowerment and Racial Justice at YWCA Greenwich; Steven Chen, Certified Facilitator with Welcoming Schools at the Human Rights Campaign; JR and Vanessa Ford, nationally known advocates for LGBTQ+ rights and authors of the picture book, “Calvin;” and Cadence Pentheny, Coordinator of Community & Corporate Learning at Triangle Community Center.

“This event provides an opportunity for the Greenwich community to move closer to Dr. King and Coretta Scott King’s vision of a just society. That vision calls on us to ensure transgender, nonbinary, and gender-nonconforming people are welcomed and included, have access to opportunity, and can live free from discrimination and violence,” said Erin O. Crosby, who will be moderating the event.

This topic is particularly meaningful for parents in the Greenwich community who are raising children who hold transgender, nonbinary, and/or gender nonconforming identities or are seeking to raise gender-conscious children.

“This topic is also important for our entire community, including educators, human service providers, funders, and policymakers, and we hope they will join in this opportunity to learn more,” said Mary Lee Kiernan, YWCA Greenwich President and CEO.
